The trap · 有 is not 'have'

This is the single most recognizable Taiwanese English error, and it comes straight from 有. A place does not 'have' things; there ARE things in it. Once a student hears the difference they rarely go back.
地方不是 have 東西,而是「那裡有」= there is / there are。

✗ The night market has many people. ✓ There are many people in the night market.
✗ My room has a desk. ✓ There is a desk in my room.
  3. (have 用在「人擁有」)✓ I have a desk. ✓ She has two brothers.
  4. Your turn — fix this: ✗ Our school has a big library and has many trees.

in, on, at · where Chinese uses one word

in、on、at・中文只用一個「在」

Three English words, one Chinese word, and no logic that transfers. Teach it as sizes: at is a point, on is a surface or a line, in is inside something. The exceptions are learned by ear, not by rule.

  1. at → at the bus stop · at school · at the corner (一個點)
  2. on → on the table · on the third floor · on Zhongshan Road (面或線)
  3. in → in the classroom · in Changhua · in my bag (裡面)
  4. 注意:in the bus 還是 on the bus?→ on the bus(交通工具用 on)
  5. Your turn: The night market is ______ Minzu Road, ______ Beidou.

Mystery Place · with all five senses

Dom's guessing game, and her homework asks for all five senses. Most students write only what they see, so require one line per sense before anyone is allowed to guess.

  1. See: ______
  2. Hear: ______
  4. Taste or touch: ______
  5. Feel (the mood): ______
  6. Worked example (do not name it): It is narrow and crowded. You hear oil hissing and someone shouting prices. It smells of garlic and something sweet. The ground is slightly wet. You are hungry before you decide anything.

Exit ticket · one room, three senses

Three sentences about a room in their own home. One must start with 'There is' or 'There are'.

  1. There ______ ______ .
  2. I can hear ______ .
  3. It smells like ______ .

Prep · 備課 No preparation needed. Two Chinese habits collide with this week: 有 becomes 'have' instead of 'there is', and 在 becomes whichever of in/on/at the student guesses first. Both show up in the very first sentence of every place description, so fix them early.
這週會同時撞上兩個中文習慣:「有」被翻成 have 而不是 there is,「在」則是 in/on/at 亂猜。

Next-week routine

Next Saturday: review this homework first, then move into Week 25.

Teacher principle: Review → Retrieve → Learn → Use → Challenge → Homework. Every week runs on the same routine, so the routine can be predictable and the learning can be creative.
