The politeness ladder

Same request, five heights. Read them down the ladder and students hear the change immediately — no explanation needed. Then give them a situation and ask which rung it deserves.

  1. ① Give me a refund. ←
  2. ② I want a refund. ← 很直
  3. ③ Can I get a refund? ← 一般
  4. ④ Could I get a refund, please? ← 客氣
  5. ⑤ I was wondering if I could get a refund. ←
  6. Which rung:

The trap · 'please' does not rescue a blunt sentence

Students learn that 請 makes things polite and assume please does the same job. It does not — please softens an already-polite structure. Rebuild the sentence first, then add please if you like.

  1. ✗ Please give me a refund. → ✓ Could I get a refund, please?
  2. ✗ Please repeat. → ✓ Sorry, could you say that again?
  3. ✗ Please help me. → ✓ Excuse me, could you help me for a second?
  4. Your turn — rebuild: ✗ Please change my room.

Customer Service Challenge · four cases

Dom's challenge, written as cases. Pairs take one each: one is the customer, one is the staff. The staff member must apologize, offer a solution, and the customer must accept or push politely. Swap roles and run again.

  1. Case 1 Your luggage did not arrive in New York.
  2. Case 2 The phone you bought last week is already broken.
  3. Case 3 The delivery came three days late and one item is missing.
  4. Case 4 You ordered vegetarian noodles and there is pork in them.
  5. Staff must use: I'm so sorry about that. · Let me see what I can do. · Could I offer you ______ ?

Exit ticket · climb one rung

Take a blunt sentence and rebuild it twice — once polite, once very polite.

  1. Blunt: Change my seat.
  2. Polite: ______
  3. Very polite: ______

Prep · 備課 No preparation needed, but this is the week to say the thing out loud that explains the whole unit: in English, politeness is built with grammar, not with tone. The longer and more indirect the sentence, the more polite it sounds. Chinese does it with 請 and with how you say it. That difference is why a fluent student can still sound rude.
