The three-step return

三步回球法

The whole week in one move. Answer, add something nobody asked for, then ask back. Students who only do step one will never sustain a conversation, no matter how good their grammar is.
整週的重點就這一招。回答、加一句沒人問你的話、再問回去。只做第一步的學生，文法再好也撐不起一段對話。

Dom's activity. Sixty seconds per partner, then rotate. The rule that makes it work: afterwards each student must recall one detail about every person they spoke to — so they have to listen, not just wait for their turn.
Dom 的活動。每位夥伴六十秒，然後輪轉。讓它有效的規則是：結束後每個學生要說出每位談話對象的一個細節——所以他們必須聽，而不是等著輪到自己講。

What did you eat for breakfast, and was it a good decision?
Where would you take a foreign visitor in Changhua?
What is a small thing that always makes you happy?
Do you prefer the mountains or the sea? Why?
Recall round: name one detail about each person you met.

The trap · two words that backfire

陷阱・兩個會反效果的字

These two travel straight from Chinese and land wrong. 其實 is a neutral softener in Chinese; 'actually' in English often means 'no, you are mistaken'. And a flat 'interesting' is heard by native speakers as polite disagreement, not interest.
這兩個字從中文直接搬過來，落地就歪了。中文的「其實」是中性的緩衝詞，英文的 actually 常常等於「不，你搞錯了」。而平板地說一句 interesting，母語者聽到的是委婉的不同意，不是有興趣。

中性想說「其實我比較喜歡茶」→ 更安全：I think I prefer tea, actually. / To be honest, I prefer tea.
想表示有興趣 → ✗ Interesting.　✓ That's interesting — how did that happen?
Rule: 'interesting' needs a follow-up question attached, or it sounds like a full stop.

An open question they would actually ask a stranger — not one from a textbook. Dom's homework needs eight of these; this is the first.
寫一個他們真的會拿去問陌生人的開放式問題，不是課本上那種。Dom 的作業要八個，這是第一個。

Prep · 備課 No preparation needed. Dom's own note says it: conversation is more than asking questions. Taiwanese students are often trained to answer and stop, waiting for the next question. English expects the ball to come back. Teach the three-step return and the silence problem disappears.
不必備課。Dom 自己在教案裡寫了：會話不只是問問題。台灣學生常被訓練成回答完就停下來，等下一個問題。英文期待你把球打回去。教會三步回球法，冷場就不見了。
