Bad Paragraph Makeover · the patient

Dom's activity needs a bad paragraph, so here is one, written badly on purpose. Hand it out, give each team six minutes, then read the versions aloud. The class votes — but a team only wins if it can say why each change is better.

  1. Last week I went to a place. The food was good. There were a lot of people.
  2. The building was big and old. We took some photos. It was a good day.
  3. I was happy. The weather was nice. I want to go again.
  4. Targets: replace every 'good' · name the place · make one sentence longer than twelve words · use two words from this week.

Which word goes with which?

Collocation, not meaning. All eight words mean roughly nice or not nice; only some of them fit each noun. Read the pair aloud — if it sounds odd to you, it is odd.

  1. ______ cliffs (stunning / elegant / dramatic)
  2. an ______ score in the exam (impressive / beautiful)
  3. an ______ solution to the problem (elegant / stunning)
  4. an ______ ending to the film (disappointing / ordinary)
  5. ✗ a beautiful score ✗ an elegant mountain ✗ a dramatic dress ←

-ing or -ed? · the cause or the feeling

Back in Week 2 this was exciting and excited. It returns here because it never stops causing trouble: -ing describes the thing, -ed describes the person. Saying 'I am boring' is the classic, and the class will laugh, which helps.

  1. The film was ______ . I was ______ . (disappointing / disappointed)
  2. ✗ I am boring. ✓ I am bored. ✓ The lesson is boring.
  3. Your turn: The news was ______ and everyone was ______ . (shocking / shocked)
  4. Your turn: I am ______ in history because history is ______ . (interested / interesting)

Exit ticket · one meal, precisely

Dom's November connection is a Thanksgiving-style descriptive paragraph without asking anyone to celebrate it. So: any meal the student remembers, three sentences, no word used twice.

  1. Describe a meal you remember. Three sentences.
  2. Rule: you may not use good, nice or big.
  3. Bonus: use one word from this week.

Prep · 備課 No preparation needed — the boring paragraph is written below, ready to hand out. This week is not about knowing more words; it is about the word that fits. Precision beats strength.
