Have You Ever…? · class bingo

你曾經…?・全班賓果

Dom asks for bingo, so here is a grid. Students move around, ask the full question, and write a name in a square only after asking one follow-up question. The follow-up is where the real English happens.
Dom 要賓果,這裡備好九宮格。學生走動、問完整的問句,追問一題之後才能在格子裡寫名字。追問的那一句才是真正在說英文。

  1. …eaten stinky tofu? | …visited Taipei 101? | …forgotten your homework?
  2. …seen a typhoon? | …tried surfing? | …met a foreigner before?
  3. …climbed a mountain? | …cooked for your family? | …been on a night train?
  4. Follow-up must be past simple: When did you…? / How was it? / Who did you go with?

The trap · 過 and 了 go to different tenses

陷阱・「過」和「了」去了不同的時態

過 is experience with no date — that is the present perfect. 了 with a finished time is the past simple. The rule that follows: the present perfect can never sit next to a finished past time. Say 'no dates allowed' and students remember it.
「過」是沒有日期的經驗——那是現在完成式。「了」加上結束的時間點,那是過去簡單式。由此得出一條規則:現在完成式旁邊不能放結束了的時間。告訴學生「完成式不准帶日期」,他們就記得住。

  1. 我去過日本。(經驗) ✓ I have been to Japan.
  2. 我去年去了日本。(有時間) ✓ I went to Japan last year.
  3. ✗ I have gone to Japan last year. ← 完成式不准帶日期
  4. Your turn — fix this: ✗ I have seen that movie yesterday.
  5. Your turn — choose: She ______ (finish) her report already.

Where the four signal words sit

四個訊號字站在哪裡

Position is half the battle. ever and already go inside, between have and the participle; yet goes to the end; never replaces the not.
位置就是一半的勝負。ever 和 already 站在中間,夾在 have 和分詞之間;yet 站句尾;never 本身就是否定,不要再加 not。

  1. Have you ever eaten it? (ever 在中間)
  2. I have already eaten it. (already 在中間)
  3. I haven't eaten it yet. (yet 在句尾)
  4. I have never eaten it. (never 取代 not)
  5. ✗ I haven't never eaten it. ← 一個句子只要一個否定

Exit ticket · one experience, one date

出場券・一個經驗,一個日期

The pair proves they see the difference. Same event, two tenses, and the second one must carry a time.
成對出現才證明他們看懂了差別。同一件事,兩種時態,第二句一定要帶時間。

  1. I have ______ . (no date allowed)
  2. I ______ last ______ . (with a date)

Prep · 備課 No preparation needed, but read the trap card before you teach — the present perfect is the single hardest tense for Chinese speakers, and the reason is specific: 過 and 了 look alike in Chinese and land in different English tenses.
不必備課,但教之前先看一眼陷阱卡——現在完成式是中文母語者最難的一個時態,原因很具體:中文的「過」和「了」長得像,在英文裡卻落在不同的時態。

Next-week routine下週例行

Next Saturday: review this homework first, then move into Week 09.

Teacher principle: Review → Retrieve → Learn → Use → Challenge → Homework. Every week runs on the same routine, so the routine can be predictable and the learning can be creative.
