The trap · idioms do not translate, in either direction

陷阱・慣用語兩個方向都不能直譯

Students try to decode 'hit the road' word by word and get nowhere — and then they translate 馬馬虎虎 into English and get the same nowhere. Say it both ways: idioms are single units of meaning, in Chinese and in English alike.
學生把 hit the road 拆成字去解,怎麼解都不對——然後他們把「馬馬虎虎」翻成英文,對方也一樣聽不懂。兩個方向都要講:慣用語在中文和英文裡都是一整塊意思,不能拆。

  1. hit the road ≠ 打路 → 意思是「出發」
  2. under the weather ≠ 在天氣下面 → 意思是「不舒服」
  3. 馬馬虎虎 ≠ horse horse tiger tiger → so-so / not bad
  4. 人山人海 ≠ people mountain people sea → packed / extremely crowded
  5. 規則:遇到拆不開的句子,就整句記起來。

Formal or Friendly? · the two-column page

正式還是親切?・兩欄對照表

This is Dom's homework, started in class. The right-hand column is what matters — students already have the casual half from YouTube. Fill five here and the homework is half done.
這就是 Dom 的作業,在課堂上先起頭。右欄才是關鍵——左邊那半學生早就從 YouTube 學會了。這裡填五組,作業就完成一半。

  1. What's up? → How are you? / Good morning.
  2. No way! → That's surprising. / I find that hard to believe.
  3. hang out → spend time together
  4. chill out → ______
  5. figure out → ______
  6. hit the road → ______
  7. I'm kidding → ______

Who are you talking to?

你在跟誰說話?

The answer to the question every student asks. Four listeners, and the same message has to change shape for each. This is the register lesson from Week 20 returning in a different costume.
這是回答學生每次都會問的那個問題。四種聽話的人,同一句話要換四種形狀。這是第 20 週的語域課換了一身衣服回來。

  1. 同一件事:你遲到了,要解釋。
  2. ① 對好朋友:Sorry, I totally lost track of time.
  3. ② 對老師:______
  4. ③ 對校長:______
  5. ④ 寫 email 給實習單位:______
  6. Rule: 越不熟、越正式,句子就越長。(第 20 週的禮貌階梯)

Exit ticket · one expression, one warning

出場券・一個說法,一個警告

One casual expression they will actually use, plus the situation where it would be a mistake.
寫一個他們真的會用的口語說法,再寫一個「用了會出事」的場合。

  1. Expression: ______
  2. I would not say this to ______ , because ______ .

Prep · 備課 No preparation needed, but be ready for the question students always ask: can I say this to my teacher? Dom's note asks you to teach when slang is appropriate, so build the whole lesson around the answer rather than the phrases. A student who knows ten expressions and no register rules will use them at exactly the wrong moment.
不必備課,但要準備好回答學生一定會問的問題:這句可以對老師說嗎?Dom 在教案裡要求教「什麼時候適合」,所以整堂課圍著這個答案走,而不是圍著片語走。只學會十個說法、卻不懂場合的學生,一定會在最不該的時候用出來。

Optional video / media plug-in影片與媒體(選用)

Optional: clean sitcom/animation clip.

Homework回家作業 · due next week

同一份教案帶混合程度的班:各級學生被要求產出的東西。

Next-week routine下週例行

Next Saturday: review this homework first, then move into Week 39.

Teacher principle: Review → Retrieve → Learn → Use → Challenge → Homework. Every week runs on the same routine, so the routine can be predictable and the learning can be creative.
