Which tense? · three questions

用哪個時態？・三個問題

Not a rule to memorize — a path to walk. Ask the three questions in order and the tense falls out. Put this on the board and leave it up for the rest of the year.
這不是要背的規則，是一條可以走的路。照順序問三個問題，時態自己就掉出來了。把它寫在白板上，接下來一整年都留著。

① Is it finished? No → is it happening right now? Yes → am/is/are + -ing. No → present simple.
② Is it finished? Yes → do you say when? Yes → past simple.
③ Finished but no date, or still true today? → have/has + third form.
Test it: 我學英文六年了。→ still true today → I have studied English for six years.

Time Machine · four zones

時光機・四個區

Dom's game. Mark four corners of the room. Call a zone, students move and must speak in the matching tense within five seconds. Anyone who uses the wrong tense goes back to the middle.
Dom 的遊戲。在教室四角標出四個區。喊一個區，學生移動過去，五秒內用對應時態說一句話。用錯時態的回到中間。

Corner 1　YESTERDAY → past simple　(I ate breakfast at seven.)
Corner 2　RIGHT NOW → present continuous　(I am standing in the corner.)
Corner 3　IN MY LIFE → present perfect　(I have visited Kenting twice.)
Corner 4　WHEN I WAS YOUNGER → past simple / used to　(I played every afternoon.)

since or for?

since 還是 for？

Both become 了 in Chinese, so students guess. since takes a point on the calendar; for takes a length. If you can answer 'when did it start?', use since. If you can answer 'how long?', use for.
兩個在中文裡都變成「了」，所以學生只能猜。since 接日曆上的一點，for 接一段長度。能回答「什麼時候開始的」用 since，能回答「多久」用 for。
